A commonplace book of overlooked news, collected by William Poundstone
When attorney Melvin Belli divorced his fifth wife, Lia Triff, he claimed she had had extramarital affairs with Bishop Desmond Tutu and Zsa Zsa Gabor. (7/10/96)
Lia was my best friend from age 12 until she married Belli. By then she wanted to put her pedestrian past behind her. I was supposed to be her matron of honor at the wedding but I declined suspecting that she only asked me because of our teenage pact and knowing I would feel terribly out of place.. As it turns out, I realized I was a lesbian in my 20's and that Lia was my first love. She and I never discussed my sexuality and whether she is bi- or gay, I can't say. Interestingly, however, her mother always seemed to be very uneasy with the friendship Lia and I shared.
